Tips For Moving in the Summer

When it’s 100 or more degrees outside, the last thing you feel like doing is spending time outdoors. But like it or not, sometimes it’s necessary, especially if you’re moving. Whether it’s for residential or commercial reasons, moving in the summer months isn’t fun by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn’t have to be as unbearable as it seems. Follow these tips to help your summertime move go as smoothly as possible.

Tip #1: Plan Ahead

If feasible, check the weather beforehand and plan to move on the coolest day of the week. Also, make sure to pack as much as possible the night beforehand. This will save you time, energy and body heat. Instead, you’ll be able to concentrate on the hard part: lifting heavy boxes and lugging them outdoors in the blistering hot sun.

Tip #2: Start Early

When moving in the summer, it’s important to remember that the early morning hours are your friend. To avoid heat exhaustion, it’s advisable to start moving in the wee hours of the morning when it’s coolest. Plan to do the hardest and most labor intensive part in the morning, so you can save the easy parts for later in the day when the heat is at its worst.

Tip #3: Stay Hydrated

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drinking plenty of water the day before and the day of is crucial to avoiding heat exhaustion. Along those same lines, be sure to take lots of breaks and eat a nourishing meal that will give you energy and sustain you throughout the day.

Tip #4: Dress Appropriately

This might seem like a no-brainer but dressing for moving in the summer is harder than you may think. You want to pick lightweight and comfortable clothing, but you also want to pick clothing that can get dirty or torn. You’d be surprised how easily it’s to nick your sleeve on the sharp edge of a dresser!

Tip #5 Don’t Skip the Sunscreen

The last thing you’ll want to deal with after a move is a painful sunburn. To protect your skin during a summer move, it’s essential to pack on the sunscreen. You’ll want to buy a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher as it will give you the most protection.

There’s no doubt about it: moving in the summer is unpleasant. While these tips are designed to help you stay cool and comfortable under the scorching hot summer sun, there’s no getting around the fact that you can’t completely hide from it. If you move yourself, you’ll more than likely get sweaty and hot!
