Tips for Downsizing

POSTED ON December 4th  - POSTED IN Blog, Furniture, Long Distance Moves, Residential Moves

For better or for worse, downsizing continues to be a fact of life for families across the Phoenix, AZ metro area.  Whether you’re facing a major change in life that is forcing you to cut back and make adjustments, or whether you’re at a stage in life when you just don’t need as much as before, downsizing can actually be a refreshing new start.

Ask anyone who has downsized before and they’ll tell you…it’s not so easy!  Making decisions about what stays and goes can lead to stress, sadness and even anger.  One person’s treasure might literally be considered trash by someone else.

We’ve put together some helpful hints and tips for downsizing that might make some decisions easier and help you avoid a fight.

Start Early – Some people know that downsizing is coming down the road, which gives them an advantage.  Now they have time to sort through their possessions and make careful decisions about what’s important and what isn’t.  Others may not have that luxury.  They may be under the gun to downsize immediately.  We suggest you start as early as possible when it comes to deciding what stays and what goes.  You’ll feel better about your decisions in the long run. Jones also provides temporary storage for their customers, so your moving process can be seamless and not overwhelming.

Room by Room – Take it one room at a time.  Start with one room – take a look at everything that is in it and consider where those items will end up at your new home.  This will help you put things into perspective.  If you realize that all of the items in your current room won’t fit in a comparable room at your future home, you have some letting go to do.

Get Rid of Clutter – Let’s face it, we’re all guilty of having clutter in at least one space in our homes. Clutter might be one of the easiest things to let go of when downsizing.  If you’ve held onto something for years hoping that you’ll someday have the time to really give it the attention it needs, downsizing is the perfect time to let that item go.  The last thing you want to do when downsizing is bring clutter along for the ride. If you are planning on getting rid of any items, Jones Moving and Storage will also pick up your items to be donated, so that you will not have to worry about the extra stress of finding how to properly donate your unwanted items.

Identify What’s Most Important – It’s understandable that parting with certain items like furniture, dishes and antiques can be challenging.  Stop and ask yourself what is most important in your life.  This might be a good time to break out a pen and paper and make a list.  When you can truly identify what is most important, you’ll find it easier to let things go that just aren’t.

Consider the Move – This is especially appropriate in long distance moves.  As you look around your current home, think about what things you actually want to prepare for moving.  What things do you trust will make it to your new home safely?  Do you need a lawnmower if you’re moving to a house with desert landscaping?  Will the heavy winter coats become clutter if you’re moving to the southwest?  Now that kids have moved out, do we need to lug that old sectional across town?

Hopefully, downsizing can be a liberating experience that helps you focus on what’s most important in life.  If you ever have concerns about how to safely transport a valuable item or the best way to prepare items for a long move, give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

How to Pack Fragile Items the Right Way

POSTED ON October 31st  - POSTED IN Blog

pack fragile itemsTo say moving is a stressful process is putting it mildly. Moving is a time consuming, energy zapping, and sometimes headache inducing undertaking, especially if you don’t hire a packing and moving service to do it for you.

If you’re set on doing it yourself, you’ll want to make sure you’re packing the RIGHT way. Yes, there actually is a right and wrong way to pack!

When it comes to packing your fragile items, here are some tips to follow to make sure your precious pieces survive the journey.

Pick the Right Supplies

It’s easy to think towels, newspapers or rugs would make good packing supplies. The truth is they don’t. Towels and rugs can slip easily during moves and newspaper often leave behind a black residue. To do a move the right way, you’ll want to invest in packing paper. It’s durable and will do the job without leaving any sort of ink behind.

Use Packing Paper or Bubble Wrap Generously

To pack fragile items, you’ll want to place lots of packing paper or bubble wrap at the bottom of the box. You’ll also want to make sure to wrap each individual item in packing paper. Nothing spells disaster more than fragile items stacked against one another without any padding or protection in between.

Think About Weight

No, I’m not talking about your own weight! I’m talking about the weight of your items. Pack the larger items on the bottom and lighter items on the top. Also, make sure not to over pack your boxes. You’ll want your fragile items to be snug, but not piled on top of one another.

When it come time to pack fragile items, the best thing you can do is be prepared and take your time. Nothing’s worse than half hazardly packing fragile items because time is running out…that’s a quick way to ensure your fragile items break during the move!

If you plan to pack fragile items, don’t forget to label the boxes as such so that you know to be extra careful with them. And remember, hiring movers is always an option! Jones Moving and Storage would be happy to lend you a helping hand. We are movers Phoenix residents trust to move even their most fragile items. Schedule your move today by calling  602-944-1413.

Tips For Moving in the Summer

POSTED ON October 16th  - POSTED IN Blog

moving during summerWhen it’s 100 or more degrees outside, the last thing you feel like doing is spending time outdoors. But like it or not, sometimes it’s necessary, especially if you’re moving. Whether it’s for residential or commercial reasons, moving in the summer months isn’t fun by any stretch of the imagination, but it doesn’t have to be as unbearable as it seems. Follow these tips to help your summertime move go as smoothly as possible.

Tip #1: Plan Ahead

If feasible, check the weather beforehand and plan to move on the coolest day of the week. Also, make sure to pack as much as possible the night beforehand. This will save you time, energy and body heat. Instead, you’ll be able to concentrate on the hard part: lifting heavy boxes and lugging them outdoors in the blistering hot sun.

Tip #2: Start Early

When moving in the summer, it’s important to remember that the early morning hours are your friend. To avoid heat exhaustion, it’s advisable to start moving in the wee hours of the morning when it’s coolest. Plan to do the hardest and most labor intensive part in the morning, so you can save the easy parts for later in the day when the heat is at its worst.

Tip #3: Stay Hydrated

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drinking plenty of water the day before and the day of is crucial to avoiding heat exhaustion. Along those same lines, be sure to take lots of breaks and eat a nourishing meal that will give you energy and sustain you throughout the day.

Tip #4: Dress Appropriately

This might seem like a no-brainer but dressing for moving in the summer is harder than you may think. You want to pick lightweight and comfortable clothing, but you also want to pick clothing that can get dirty or torn. You’d be surprised how easily it’s to nick your sleeve on the sharp edge of a dresser!

Tip #5 Don’t Skip the Sunscreen

The last thing you’ll want to deal with after a move is a painful sunburn. To protect your skin during a summer move, it’s essential to pack on the sunscreen. You’ll want to buy a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher as it will give you the most protection.

There’s no doubt about it: moving in the summer is unpleasant. While these tips are designed to help you stay cool and comfortable under the scorching hot summer sun, there’s no getting around the fact that you can’t completely hide from it. If you move yourself, you’ll more than likely get sweaty and hot!

If you’re not the type who likes manual labor, consider hiring movers. Phoenix based Jones Moving & Storage can do all the work for you! We’ll pack and move your belongings, even on the hottest of hot days. Give us a call at 602-944-1413 to find out how we can help simplify your move.
